What are the main problems we see in our Podiatry clinic?
No two days are ever the same in a Podiatry clinic. We always have a mix of patients coming through the door, and each person has their own unique feet. However, there are some common conditions that we deal with on a regular basis. Here are some of the most common.
Fungal toenails.
Studies show that between approximately 3% and 8% of the UK population is affected by fungal nail infections at any one time. At our clinic, this is one of the biggest reasons people visit us for treatment and advice. For many people affected by fungal toenails, it is their appearance which can cause embarrassment. However, a fungal nail infection can also be uncomfortable, as the infection can cause the nail to thicken and sometimes crumble or break. Fungal nail infections can be stubborn to treat, but we will advise on the best course of action for your nails and skin.
Athlete’s foot
This often goes hand in hand with fungal nail infections. Sometimes athlete’s foot (or Tinea Pedis to give it it’s medical name), masquerades as dry skin. We often get people coming to see us because they have concerns about the skin texture on their feet, having used all sorts of creams, to no effect. Athlete’s foot doesn’t always mean itchy skin between the toes! If you want to know more about athlete’s foot, you can read our blog here.
Verrucae
Verrucae are another common condition that we see in clinic. These stubborn, viral skin lesions can be both unsightly and painful. We’ve seen all kinds of verrucae in clinic, from one or two small lesions of a few millimetres across, to almost the whole sole of the foot being covered. There’s really not much we haven’t seen when it comes to verrucae! As with fungal nails, any treatment plan depends on the individual in from of us, so we will always advise on what courses of treatment are suitable.
General nail and skin care.
For many people, their feet become less easy to reach and manage, due to various reasons, such as arthritis or eyesight problems. Many of our regular patients come to us for regular management of toenails, callus, corns or other skin conditions.
Remember, don’t be embarrassed by your feet! The above conditions are things which we see on a regular basis, and we are here to help.
However, this is also not an exhaustive list of what we deal with in our clinic. We’re here to help with any foot-related issues, so please don’t hesitate to get in touch.
