Winter Foot care
Winter foot care
Winter can be a hard time for our feet. So how do we best look after them? Here are our tips for winter footcare.
Socks
Thicker socks are always a good idea in the colder months of the year. Socks made of natural fibres like bamboo and merino wool have great thermal qualities and will help keep your feet toasty. Also, layering socks with even a thinner nylon pair will help to keep your feet warm, as this traps a layer of air between the socks, which is a great insulator.
Footwear
During the winter months, we mostly tend to stick to boots and closed in shoes to keep out the cold and the wet. Combined with thicker socks, this can cause pressure to the toes especially, that we don’t normally have with open summer shoes.
When thinking about winter shoes, always take into account the thicker socks when trying shoes and boots on. Take a pair of winter socks with you and wear them when trying on any footwear. Also, when considering winter footwear, a thicker sole will help to protect the feet from the cold ground and keep chilblains at bay.
The feet themselves
Feet can get neglected in the winter months, tucked away in socks and shoes, it is often a case of “out of sight and out of mind”. Do not forget about your feet! Regular moisturiser helps to keep the skin in good condition, and using a warming cream can keep chilblains at bay too. Keeping nails short and tidy will prevent excess pressure on the nail from closed in shoes and thicker socks. Winter is also a good time to give your nails a break from polish and leave them bare.
